At the heart of this programme lies the moving aria‑duo for tenor and traverso from Bach’s cantata 55. The title Erbarme dich inevitably recalls the famous alto aria from the St Matthew Passion, yet here it refers to the poignant and sensuous duet Bach composed in Leipzig. It belongs to a wider group of cantatas (1724–1726) in which Bach creates an intimate and expressive dialogue between voice and flute.

A substantial group of cantatas composed in Leipzig between 1724 and 1726 reveals how Bach crafts a subtle and playful exchange between voice and flute. He highlights, challenges or transforms the meaning of the text through vocal lines of remarkable intensity, creating a musical discourse of great refinement.

This programme formed the basis of the very first recording by a nocte temporis for the Alpha label, released in October 2016. The tenth anniversary of this recording and of the ensemble will be celebrated in 2026 with a revival of the programme in Belgium and abroad.
