With Telemann and Rameau, from sunrise to nightfall, a nocte temporis creates a poetic dialogue between two masters of the late Baroque.
Although historians are unsure whether Telemann and Rameau ever met, they were brilliant contemporaries - each with a distinct musical voice, yet remarkably complementary.
At the heart of the programme lies Telemann’s Die Tageszeiten, a cycle portraying the four moments of the day. Each movement features a solo voice with one or more obbligato instruments and concludes with an ensemble section bringing all four voices together.
- Morning: soprano & trumpet
- Midday: alto/mezzosoprano & viola da gamba
- Evening: tenor & two traversos
- Night: bass & two oboes and bassoon
After each movement, a nocte temporis lets Rameau respond with opera excerpts in which he colours the same time of day - or elements of it - with his own dramatic and expressive palette. The result is a vivid musical exchange between German and French Baroque, between light and shadow, between brilliance and stillness.
